Bruin Pole Vaulters Steal the Show at Don Kirby, Complete Split Weekend on the Road
February 10, 2024 | Track & Field
LOS ANGELES - The UCLA Track and Field team concluded day two at the Don Kirby Invitational, hosted by the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. at the Albuquerque Convention Center, the Boston College Eagle Elite Invitational, hosted by Boston College at the TRACK at New Balance in Boston, Mass., and the Husky Classic hosted by the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash. at Dempsey Indoor on Saturday.
The Bruins added four total UCLA Indoor All-Time Top-10 marks, including two records and PR's for the women's pole vault at the Don Kirby Invitational. The vaulters landed in two top-20 positions in competition this season.
Senior Ka'Leila Abrille took home the event victory in the women's event. Her PR mark of 4.40m (14-05.25) was not only good enough for gold at the meet, but also the third-best jump in UCLA's indoor history. She breaks her own record (4.36m, 14-03.50) set last week at the Texas A&M Invitational on Feb. 3. This is Abrille's second event victory for the indoor season; Saturday's mark also lands Abrille tied for 8th in the NCAA this season in her field event.
Saturday's success for the women's pole vault at the Don Kirby Invitational was a continuation of the elite performance seen on the men's side. On Friday, Feb. 9, sophomore Hunter O'Brien's PR mark of 5.42m (17-09.25) landed him a top-10 finish in the men's event and seventh on UCLA's Indoor All-Time Top-10 list. O'Brien's personal-best mark also puts him 20th in the nation in competition this year.
Senior Katerina Adamiec (4.23m, 13-10.50) secured a silver while also completing a PR mark, the third PR mark for UCLA Pole Vault this weekend. She now sits tied for sixth on UCLA's All-Time Top-10 list. It is her third podium finish for the indoor season.
In addition to the women's pole vault, UCLA also took home podium finishes in the women's 4x400m relay (9), the men's 4x400m relay (11), the women's 60m hurdles (14), and the women's 60m. Bruins also secured top-10 finishes in the men's and women's shot put.
