MVB Crashes Waves in Malibu

The No. 4 UCLA men's volleyball team handed No. 11 Pepperdine its first home loss on the season on Saturday afternoon in Malibu. Scores of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match were 30-28, 25-11, 25-19. The Bruins recorded their 21st straight MPSF regular-season win and improved to 2-0 in league action and 11-3 for the season. Pepperdine fell to 7-1 at home and to 9-4 overall and 0-2 in MPSF play. The Bruins will remain on the road next week with a pair of matches at No. 6 BYU.
Sean McQuiggan led the way for UCLA today with a career-best nine kills while hitting .818. He added a team-high five blocks. Zach Rama topped the team in kills with 12. Cooper Robinson served up a career-high tying three aces.
Pepperdine scored the first five points of the day and moved out to a 2-7 first-set lead. A pair of Robinson kills narrowed the gap to 9-12. McQuiggan's kill made it 13-15. A Rama spike left UCLA down 15-17. Grant Sloane's kill was followed by a Robinson/McHenry block to pull the Bruins to within one at 17-18. McQuiggan and Sloane teamed up for consecutive stuffs to move UCLA into the lead for the first time in the set at 21-20. Each team then wasted set point opportunities down the stretch before a Rama kill and a McQuiggan block ended the set at 30-28.
The Bruins dominated set two shooting out to an 8-2 lead on a Rama swing. A Robinson kill made it 13-5. Andrew Rowan put one down for a 16-6 lead. Robinson went cross court for 18-7 and then fired off a pair of aces to up the margin to 20-7. A McQuiggan spike made it 24-10 and the Bruins secured the set on a Wave service error.
UCLA jumped in front 7-4 in set three before being caught at 8-all by the Waves. Pepperdine kept the momentum and went on to open up a 9-12 margin. However, three straight Wave errors helped the Bruins level the score at 12. McQuiggan's kill tied the score at 15 and joined Rowan and Rama for a triple-block to push UCLA in front by one. An ace by Rama helped key a 5-0 run for the Bruins and produced a 21-16 lead. McQuiggan's tip made it 22-17. Luca Curci's two aces sent UCLA to set point at 24-17. The Waves saved two match points before Robinson's put away finished off the set at 25-19.
