No. 2 UCLA Splits a Pair on Opening Day

HONOLULU -- No. 2 UCLA (1-1) opened the 2024 season with a 4-1 loss to No. 1 USC (1-1) on Thursday afternoon (Feb. 22) at the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic at Queen's Beach. The Bruins rallied to sweep No. 9 Hawai'i (0-2), 5-0, in the second dual of the day. The Bruins fell to 20-30 all-time against the Trojans. UCLA improved to 20-6 all-time against the Rainbow Wahine with its 12th-straight win in the series.
In the dual against the Trojans, UCLA's lone point was scored on court five. The Bruins' pair of junior Natalie Myszkowski and redshirt freshman Ensley Alden took down Ainsley Radell and Ashley Pater in straight sets, 21-15, 21-15. The win marked the first for Alden of her young collegiate career.
In the dual against the Rainbow Wahine, UCLA senior Tessa Van Winkle and graduate student Jaden Whitmarsh clinched the win over UH on court three with a 21-17, 21-13 win over Arianna Franklin and Kaylee Glagau. The sweep over Hawai'i also marked the first dual victory for Head Coach Jenny Johnson Jordan.
The Bruins return to action tomorrow when they take on No. 7 Stanford (2-0) at 1:30 p.m. PST. The Cardinal posted two upsets today as they took down No. 5 LMU (1-1) and No. 1 USC. UCLA will conclude pool play with No. 5 LMU at 4:00 p.m. PST.
