Jones’ Career Night Leads No. 12 UCLA Past No. 18 Utah, 82-52

February 22, 2024 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELESLondynn Jones tallied a career-high 23 points to lead the No. 12 UCLA women's basketball program past No. 18 Utah, 82-52, inside Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom on Thursday evening.

In addition to her career high in points, Jones hit a career-high seven 3-pointers on Thursday, finishing 8-for-12 from the field and 7-for-10 from behind the arc. Other Bruins in double figures included Lauren Betts with 14 points, Kiki Rice with 13 points, and Charisma Osborne with 13 points and seven assists.

The Bruins (21-5, 10-5 Pac-12) jumped out to a 9-0 lead over Utah (19-8, 9-6 Pac-12) after just over a minute and a half of action. Jones cashed in a corner three to start the run, while Betts added two baskets down low. After the Bruins got their fifth stop in a row to begin the game on the defensive end, Jones hit a second corner triple, making it 12-0 Bruins at the 7:47 mark of the first quarter.

Betts followed Jones' lead and poured in the Bruins' eighth basket of the quarter to give UCLA a 20-8 lead with 4:50 remaining in the first quarter. On the next possession, Osborne corralled the Utah missed shot, recording the 800th rebound of her career, and with that board became the second player in Pac-12 history to score 2,000 points and grab 800 rebounds.

UCLA ended the first period of play up 10, 25-15.

To begin the second quarter Gabriela Jaquez opened her account with a fastbreak layup, courtesy of a Camryn Brown block on the other end of the floor to get the move started.

The Bruins picked off three passes and forced 11 turnovers in the first half. The fourth steal of the half sent UCLA on their way to their third fastbreak basket of the night, as Jones stripped the ball and threw it up court to Osborne who buried it in to put UCLA up 33-19 with 5:47 remaining.

UCLA ended the half on a 6-0 run over the final 1:21, increasing their lead to 14, 39-25. During that run, Osborne tossed the ball the length of the court to Angela Dugalic who dropped it in for the easy two points.

Betts then added a pair of free throws and another bucket down low, ending the half with 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the floor.

Halfway through the third quarter Jones connected on her third three-pointer of the night, pushing the Bruins up 16, 48-32. She then stretched the Bruins' lead to a then game-high 20 points when she buried her fourth triple of the night from the top of the arc, giving the Bruins a 52-32 advantage.

Jones continued her three-point barrage 58 seconds later when she hit her fifth 3-pointer of the night, putting the Bruins up 56-32 with 2:51 remaining in the third quarter. UCLA closed the third quarter on a 14-2 run, taking a 59-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

Jones hit her sixth triple of the night, tying her career high, and put the Bruins up 28 to begin the fourth quarter. Rice followed that with two foul shots to push the Bruins' cushion to 30, 64-34, with 7:14 to go in the game. A few minutes later Jones nailed her seventh triple of the night with 5:50 remaining, giving her a new career-high in points (23) and made threes (7).

UCLA cruised from there, with Jaquez adding six points late on to help the Bruins to a 30-point win, 82-52 on Thursday evening.

UP NEXT: UCLA returns to action on Monday night against No. 11 Colorado with Tip-off set for 6 p.m. PT from Pauley Pavilion. The game will also be broadcast on ESPN with Beth Mowins and Stephanie White on the call.
