Women's Tennis Beats LMU 6-1 to Start Homestand
February 23, 2024 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA women's tennis team, playing at Los Angeles Tennis Center for the first time since its Jan. 19 season opener, defeated LMU 6-1 in non-conference action Friday afternoon.
Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer and Elise Wagle logged two-win days for the Bruins (3-3). Wagle clinched the overall victory. Kim-Michaela Zahraj prevailed for the Lions (1-4). Each of the day's singles matches was completed in straight sets.
The partnership of Lutkemeyer and Ahmani Guichard continued to shine, posting its eighth consecutive win. The pair improved to 10-1 overall with its 6-1 performance against Zahraj and Romane Longueville on Court 2. The UCLA tandems on Courts 1 and 3 led by identical 5-3 margins, but it was the top-court combination of Wagle and Kimmi Hance that registered the decider. Hance and Wagle broke the serve of Carlota Molina and Isabella Tcherkes-Zade at 4-3 and closed it out with a hold.
Five first sets went the way of the Bruins. The 87th-ranked Bianca Fernandez added to their tally with a 6-4, 6-1 showing versus Tcherkes-Zade on Court 2. The decision was Fernandez's first on Court 2. Then, on Court 6, Vagramov recorded the first singles win of 2023-24 and 56th of her career. She topped Anastasia Bozova 6-3, 6-2.
No. 124 Wagle's second career victory on Court 3, a 6-3, 6-1 result over Longueville, gave UCLA its fourth point. Wagle has won five of her past six decisions.
Zahraj got LMU on the board with her 6-3, 6-3 decision over Guichard on Court 5. Tian Fangran quickly answered for the Bruins, however, controlling the Court 1 matchup with Molina by a 6-2, 6-2 margin. Finally, Lutkemeyer closed out Fiona Arrese 7-6(4), 6-3 on Court 4.
UCLA returns back to the courts Saturday, when its hosts Cal State Fullerton. First serve in that one is scheduled for 11 a.m. PT.
