No. 1 UCLA Posts a Pair of 4-1 Wins at Battle for LA

LOS ANGELES -- No. 1 UCLA (6-3) captured two dual victories on Friday (March 1) in its home opener on day one of the Battle for Los Angeles at Mapes Beach.
Securing 4-1 wins over No. 8 California (4-1) and No. 18 Cal Poly (4-1), the Bruins remain historically undefeated against both programs. UCLA improved to 15-0 all-time against the Golden Bears and 13-0 all-time against the Mustangs.
In the morning dual against the Golden Bears, senior Peri Brennan and graduate student Devon Newberry put the Bruins up 1-0 on court two, defeating Emma Donley and Alex Young-Gomez in a three-set victory, 21-12, 11-21, 15-12.
California's Lara Boos and Brooke Buchner defeated redshirt freshman Kenzie Brower and senior Jessie Smith 19-21, 21-15, 17-19 to put the Golden Bears on the board, tying the dual at 1-1.
Sophomore Maggie Boyd and graduate student Lexy Denaburg won in straight sets over Sierra Caffo and Kendall Peters, 21-18, 21-12, pulling UCLA ahead 2-1.
To clinch the dual, junior Natalie Myszkowski and redshirt freshman Ensley Alden took the victory over Portia Sherman and Ella Dreibholz in three sets, 21-17, 17-21, 15-9.
Graduate student Jaden Whitmarsh and senior Tessa Van Winkle defeated Marilu Pally and Gia Fisher on court three, 21-19, 11-21, 15-11 to close out the first dual of the day.
In exhibition play, junior Reagan Hope and junior Sophie Moore defeated Mila Vugrincic and Jenna Colligan, 25-23, 21-17.
To begin the afternoon dual against the Mustangs, Brennan and Newberry defeated Piper Ferch and Erin Inskeep, 21-14, 21-18, allowing the Bruins to go up 1-0.
UCLA took a 2-0 lead with a thrilling three-set comeback by Brower and Smith on court four over Piper Naess and Logan Walter, 19-21, 21-13, 22-20.
Boyd and Denaburg clinched the dual, 13-21, 21-17, 15-12 over Ella Connor and Izzy Martinez on court one.
Cal Poly's lone point came on court three, with former Bruin Lindsey Sparks and Quinn Perry defeating Van Winkle and Whitmarsh, 19-21, 19-21.
Myszkowski and graduate student Rileigh Powers closed out the second dual of the day, taking the victory over Abbey Reinard and Madi Nicholas, 19-21, 21-19, 18-16 for the Bruins to win the dual, 4-1. It marked Powers' first match of the season.
In exhibition play, Hope and junior Madeline Bonanni defeated Emma Zuffelato and Sydney Terrell, 21-15, 21-10. It marked the first action of Bonanni's career.
