Bruins Fall to UConn in Midweek Action, 5-2

LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA baseball team dropped a 5-2 midweek game to Connecticut on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
It was the first of a season-long eight-game homestand for the Bruins (5-10). UConn improved to 4-9 with the victory.
The game was decided by a four-run Huskies' sixth. Cleanup man Luke Broadhurst had the big blow of that rally, hitting a three-run homer that ended up as the game-winning hit. UConn continued to rally after the roundtripper, bringing in another run on an RBI single. ย
The Bruins were limited to three hits in the contest, with two of them coming off the bat of freshman third baseman Roman Martin.
Martin ended up opening and closing the scoring for the Bruins. In the third, he drew the last of four consecutive walks issued by the Huskies to force in a run. Then in the sixth, he connected on a hanging breaking ball in a 1-2 count and sent it out of the park inside the left-field foul pole for a solo homer. It was Martin's first-collegiate home run.
UCLA used five pitchers in the contest.
Most impressive was freshman righty Landon Stump, who drew the start and allowed just one hit over three shutout innings. Graduate closer Rashad Ruff got the final four outs of the game for UCLA, without allowing a run.
UCLA continues the homestand this weekend, hosting league rival Washington State starting on Friday night at 6 p.m. PT and continuing at 2 p.m. PT on Saturday and 1 p.m. PT on Sunday. The entire set will be streamed live through the Pac-12.
