Bruins Drop Friday Night Bout With USC

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA baseball team absorbed a 15-2 loss to USC in Friday night's Pac-12 series opener at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Bruins moved to 7-12, 2-5 Pac-12 with the result, while USC jumped to 8-13, 4-3.
Friday's contest was close in the early and middle innings, but USC pulled away with a three-spot in the fifth to make it 5-0 before pulling away with a seven-run sixth.
Junior second baseman Duce Gourson had a team-high three hits, including a pair of doubles and an RBI, to pace UCLA offensively. Freshman catcher Cashel Dugger accounted for the Bruins' first run, smashing a double into a shift-vacated right field to plate freshman DH Roman Martin in the fifth. That knock temporarily brought UCLA within four at 5-1. Gourson added an RBI two-bagger over the left fielder's head in the eighth.
USC was led by catcher Jacob Galloway, who reached base four times and drove in four. He opened the game's scoring with a two-run homer in the third. Second baseman Ryan Jackson added a 2-4, four-RBI day, and DH Kevin Takeuchi had two hits and three runs driven in.
Trojans' starter Caden Aoki received the decision with six innings of one-run ball.
Freshman righty Owen Egan made his collegiate debut for the Bruins on Friday, allowing just one hit and striking out three over 1 2/3 innings of work.
The Bruins will look to even the series on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. PT. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
