BERKELEY, Calif. โ The UCLA baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision to California on Saturday afternoon at Stu Gordon Stadium.
The result clinched a series win for the Golden Bears (10-3, 2-0 Pac-12), who never trailed in the contest. UCLA dropped to 5-8, 0-2 with the loss.
Saturday's contest was close throughout, with the two teams tied or separated by a single run until Cal pulled away with a go-ahead two-spot in the seventh before adding an insurance run on a solo homer in the eighth.
Junior shortstop Cody Schrier (2-4) was UCLA's performer on Saturday, finishing as the lone Bruin with multiple hits while also driving in the team's lone run of the day.
That run came in the sixth inning, as he plated redshirt junior right fielder AJ Salgado from second with a line single to left field to knot the score at 1-1. Salgado had previously reached with a solid single back up the middle before moving into scoring position on a Duce Gourson groundout.
Schrier was also partially responsible for keeping the Bruins within a run in the top half of the sixth, going deep in the hole to start a 6-4-3 double play that helped the Bruins put up a defensive zero.
Caleb Lomavita had the decisive hit for Cal, lining a base hit through the right side with the bases loaded to bring in two runs and make it 3-1 in the seventh. Peyton Schulze provided a solo homer the next frame to close the game's scoring.
UCLA starter Finn McIlroy was solid on Saturday, allowing one earned run on three hits over four innings. He struck out four. Freshman righty Landon Stump followed with two scoreless relief innings.
Cal's Tom Mayer matched McIlroy, allowing just one run over his 5 1/3 innings of work. Connor Sullivan closed it out with three scoreless frames to earn the save for the Golden Bears.
UCLA and Cal conclude the series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. PT.
