MVB Sends Off Seniors With Win
April 13, 2024 | Men's Volleyball
The No. 2 UCLA men's volleyball team (22-4, 11-1) concluded the regular season with a sweep of Concordia-Irvine in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match played on Saturday night in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Scores of the Senior Night contest were 25-14, 25-16, 25-20.
The Bruins captured their 11th straight win on the season, 18th straight regular season MPSF win at home, and will enter next week's league tournament as the No. 1 seed. UCLA's first post-season match will be on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at the Galen Center against the lowest remaining seeded team after Wednesday's MPSF Quarterfinal round (see full MPSF bracket below).
Ayrton Garcia-Jurado, Guy Genis, Alex Knight, Merrick McHenry, David Flores, Grant Sloane and Ethan Champlin participated in Senior Night festivities before the match. Knight, who equaled his career-high with three aces, led UCLA with 12 kills in a return to his outside hitter position. McHenry registered 12 kills on 14 swings and hit .857 to record his 23rd straight match hitting at least .400. He also improved his all-time school mark for block solos with his 48th stuff. Sloane added a career-best four aces in the contest. Champlin topped the team with nine digs and added an ace. Andrew Rowan set the team to a.456 attack percentage which marks the 15th match this season that the team has hit at least .350 under his direction.
UCLA moved out to a quick 4-0 first-set lead after a strong service run by Sloane who registered a couple of aces. The Bruins led 8-3 after a Knight swing. Genis' put away made it 10-4. Rowan and McHenry teamed up for a block and a 14-6 advantage. A pair of McHenry kills put UCLA up 16-8 and then 21-13. Champlin's spike, on a set by Flores, upped the margin to 22-14. Ido David added a kill for set point, at 24-14, and a Champlin / McHenry block ended the frame at 25-14.
Rowan's kill lifted UCLA into a 5-3 edge to begin set two. Knight's spike increased the lead to 10-7. Sloane's swing made it 13-9. A series of service errors left UCLA in front 16-12. Two kills from Genis helped advance the margin to 19-12. Champlin's back row blast made it 22-14. Knight's added another kill for 23-16. Sloane's third ace of the match ended the set at 25-16.
An ace from Knight produced a 5-3 Bruin lead in set three. Sloane / Knight / Genis combined for a block and a 9-7 edge. Three straight kills by McHenry resulted in a 13-9 advantage. Sloane's kill was followed by his fourth ace. Zach Rama connected for a 21-16 lead. McHenry's solo stuff and kill moved the gap to 23-18. Genis supplied set point with his fourth winner of the night. CUI followed with a kill, but an errant Golden Eagle serve ended the match at 25-20.
