Jewett, Schrier Stand Out in 8-3 Win Over Stanford

LOS ANGELES โ Junior righty Luke Jewett turned in eight strong innings and junior shortstop Cody Schrier made a number of strong plays on both sides of the ball to lead UCLA to an 8-3 win over Stanford on Thursday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
After yielding two runs in the top of the first, the Bruins (17-33, 7-21 Pac-12) responded with a go-ahead three-spot in the bottom half and never relinquished the lead.
Jewett limited Stanford (20-30, 11-17) to one run over the rest of his outing, and freshman right-hander Justin Lee closed the door with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Bruins got multiple outs on three plays in the game, including a rare triple play in the third. UCLA also turned a pair of double plays, with freshman third baseman Roch Cholowsky ending the game after snagging a liner at third and doubling up a runner at second for the final out.
Redshirt junior right fielder AJ Salgado had a pair of singles to finish as the lone Bruin with multiple hits, and he also reached base a co-team-high three times. Freshman left fielder Dean West also reached three times and drove in a pair, and Schrier had the Bruins' lone double on the night and also finished as the only player with multiple runs scored.
Stanford out-hit the Bruins on the night, 10-6, including two-knock nights from Cort MacDonald and Charlie Saum.
After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first, UCLA immediately got to work in the bottom half, getting the first three batters of the inning aboard on a single, walk, and hit by pitch. UCLA would go on to cash in each of those three runners, with one coming in on a Cholowsky tapper in front of the plate and two more coming across on a West base hit through the left side.
UCLA stretched the lead and produced the eventual game-winning run with another three-spot in the third. Schrier had the big hit of that rally, scorching a double off the left-field padding to bring in two before scoring himself on a Blake Balsz base hit to right.
The Bruins got some insurance in the eighth, parlaying back-to-back four-pitch walks to start the inning into a pair of runs on a Payton Brennan RBI groundout and an RBI single from Salgado.
Strong pitching from Jewett and some timely defense made that run support hold up, as the Cardinal crossed home just once after the first inning.
A turning point in the game came in the top of the third, as Stanford โ trailing just 3-2 at that point โ got its first two batters of that inning aboard. The next batter, Saum, got into a full count and hit a soft sinking liner back towards the pitcher's mound. Jewett was able to react in time and snag the ball just before it hit the ground and โ with most on the field unsure whether or not he had caught it โ turned and fired to the second base bag. Schrier collected the throw behind the bag, stepped on it, and then tagged a nearby runner to complete the 1-6 triple play.
After that triple play, Jewett didn't allow another hit until a leadoff single in the eighth. The Ladera Ranch, Calif. native ultimately rolled up a tailor-made 6-4-3 double play to escape a bases-loaded jam with just one run of damage against in that frame.
Jewett retired eight straight at one point between the fifth and seventh innings, and ended his day having allowed nine hits and three runs (all earned) with two walks and six strikeouts over eight innings. It was the second time this season โ both coming over the last three weeks โ that he completed eight frames.
UCLA and Stanford continue the series on Friday night starting at 6 p.m. PT. The game will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
