Bruins Move up 11 Spots, Sit Fourth Overall at NCAA Championships

CARLSBAD, Calif. – The UCLA women's golf team moved 11 spots up the leaderboard on Saturday and sit fourth (-2, 574) after the second round of the NCAA Championships at La Costa Champions Course at Omni Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California. Zoe Antoinette Campos and Meghan Royal each shot 3-under to lead the Bruins.

The Bruins concluded the second day of action nine strokes shy of Texas A&M (-11, 565) in first place, sit four strokes behind Stanford in second (-6, 570), and are one shot behind Clemson (-3, 573).

Adela Cernousek of Texas A&M leads the field through 36 holes at -8 (136), while UCLA's Caroline Canales finished at even-par on Saturday and sits tied for seventh at 3-under after the second day of play.

UCLA finished the round -5 for the day, which was tied with both Oregon and USC for the lowest team score of the day.

Campos and Royal both shot 3-under 69s on Saturday and both moved up over 50 spots on the leaderboard. Campos finished the day with three birdies, 15 pars, and zero bogeys. She recorded her 20th round under par of the season and tied the UCLA single-season record for most rounds under par, joining an elite list of Bruins who have accomplished the feat, including Lilia Vu, Bronte Law and Alison Lee. She enters Sunday's round now tied for 23rd overall at -1 for the tournament.

Royal was one of the big movers on the day, as she moved up 58 spots in the overall rankings from +3 to E for the tournament. The sophomore posted a 3-under 69 on Friday, and her round featured four birdies, 13 pars and one bogey. Crucially for the team, she birdied two of her last seven holes to help bring the Bruins under par as a team for the tournament.

Canales shot even par on the day for UCLA. Her round of 72 puts keeps her at 3-under for the tournament and puts her in a tie for seventh overall. Canales round included two birdies, 14 pars, and two bogeys.

No Bruin shot more than two-over for the round, as both Kate Villegas and Natalie Vo both put in solid performances. Villegas finished her round with five birdies, seven pars, and six bogeys, putting her at +1 for the day and +3 for the tournament. Vo finished +2 on Saturday and had two birdies, 12 pars, and four bogeys.

About the NCAA Championships:
Thirty teams and six individuals take the course for three rounds of stroke play Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The field will be cut to 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team after Sunday's round, with the final round of stroke play taking place Monday. The individual national champion will be crowned on Monday and the top eight teams will advance to match play competition.

The quarterfinals and semifinals of match play will be on Tuesday, May 21. The NCAA title match will be played Wednesday, May 22 to determine the team champion.
