Fernandez, Hance Fall in Day One of NCAA Singles Play
May 20, 2024 | Women's Tennis
Stillwater, Okla. - The UCLA women's tennis team suffered a pair of defeats in the opening day of the NCAA Individual Championships on Monday afternoon at Oklahoma State's Greenwood Tennis Center.
Singles play kicked off the individual portion of the NCAA Championships on Monday, as junior Kimmi Hance and freshman Bianca Fernandez were both in action. Hance was first on court, falling in straight sets to North Carolina State's Anna Zyryanova, 6-3, 6-3.
Fernandez, on the other hand, started out extremely strong in her match with Miami's Isabella Pfennig, winning the first set 6-0. Pfennig, however, was able to find her form and lost just two games the rest of the match en route to a 0-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory to advance to Tuesday's second round.
The two losses conclude the Bruins' involvement in the singles draw in Oklahoma.
UCLA's Tian Fangran and Elise Wagle get underway in the doubles draw on Tuesday, facing Auburn's 5-8 seeds Ariana Arseneault and DJ Bennett in first-round action.
