UCLA captured the doubles point with straight-set wins at Courts 3 and 1. Bruin freshmen Kayla Chung and Mayu Crossley topped Brianna Baldi and Maria Ciubotaru 6-3 at No. 3 doubles, while the No. 31 pair of Olivia Center and Kate Fakih edged No. 75 Dorner/Monfils 7-5 at the top spot.
The only real drama in doubles came at Court 2, as Ahmani Guichard and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer saved two match points down 5-6 to force a tiebreaker. They were leading the breaker 6-2 when play was suspended, with the Nittany Lionsย saving one match point.
Fakih turned in the most dominating singles performance on the afternoon at Court 4, cruising over Baldi 6-1, 6-1 to put UCLA up 2-0. Crossley was next to finish at Court 2 with a crisp 6-3, 6-3 over Maiko Uchijima. That set the stage for UCLA's No. 40 Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer to seal the deal at Court 1, as she edged Monfils 6-4, 6-2.
Seeing just her second dual-match action of the season, Bruin freshman Rona Rugara showed fight at court No. 6, battling back from a 5-2 deficit in the first set to win 7-6(5). She was leading the second set 2-0 when play was suspended.
Next up for the Bruins is a road match at Michigan on March 21 at 9:00 a.m.
