No. 10 Women's Tennis Drops 4-3 Decision at Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. โ The No. 10-ranked UCLA women's tennis team dropped a Big Ten Conference match at No. 28 Michigan on Saturday in a 4-3 thriller at Varsity Tennis Stadium.
A three-set result on Court 5 was the difference, with Emily Sartz-Lunde of the Wolverines (7-5, 4-1 Big Ten) collecting the victory. UCLA (8-5, 2-3 Big Ten) won the doubles point, before dropping two of the first three singles matches. Bianca Fernandez on Court 4 put the Bruins up 3-2, but unfortunately for the Bruins, Michigan won the final two matches to earn a comeback 4-3 win on Saturday.
The Bruins secured the doubles point with hard-fought wins on Courts 2 and 3. On Court 2 Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer/Mayu Crossley combined to take down Laura Rahnel/Reese Miller of Michigan, 6-4. UCLA followed that with Ahmani Guichard and Kayla Chung defeating No. 86 Piper Charney and Emily Sartz-Lunde, 7-6(5) to earn the doubles point.
As for singles play, Crossley defeated No. 20 Lily Jones in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. In a contest between two ranked players, UCLA's freshman prevailed with her ninth straight sets win of the season, pushing UCLA in front 2-0.
Michigan responded with a straight-set win of its own on Court 3 to notch a point on the board. The Wolverines then tied the match at 2-2 with another win on Court 6, as Laura Rahnel prevailed.
Each of the three remaining matches went to a decisive third set. On Court 4, Fernandez โ ranked No. 119 overall in singles play โ took down Michigan's Jessica Bernales in three sets. Fernandez took the first set handily, 6-1, before dropping the second set 4-6. The junior then took the third set in a tiebreaker, 7-6(5), to give the Bruins a 3-2 lead with two courts still in action.
Michigan tied the match with a win on Court 1 in a dual between two top-25-ranked singles players. No. 21-ranked Piper Charney of Michigan defeated No. 11 Lutkemeyer of UCLA, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, making the score 3-3.
The match came down to Court 5, where Guichard and the Bruins narrowly fell in three sets.
UCLA will try to bounce back at No. 65 Michigan State Sunday morning. The Bruins and Spartans will battle at 9 a.m. PT inside the MSU Indoor Tennis Center on the campus of Michigan State.
