UCLA Rowing's Rosemary Varney Earns All-Pac-12 Team Honors
May 24, 2024 | Women's Rowing
UCLA senior Rosemary Varney has secured All-Pac-12 Team women's rowing honors for the first time in her career, as announced Friday afternoon by the Pac-12 Conference office.
Varney, who hails from Ojai, California, rowed in the Bruins' varsity eight crew (V8+) throughout her sophomore, junior and senior seasons (2022 through 2024). As a senior in the spring of 2024, Varney rowed exclusively in the varsity eight crew in all five gattas.
Varney helped the Bruins to multiple strong showings throughout the season, while sitting primarily in the six seat for the Bruins. She was in the second seat as the Bruins finished in third at the Lake Natoma Invitational, before sitting in the six seat the remainder of the season.
She helped the Bruins to multiple top finishes at the Big Ten Invite, including a second-place finish on Saturday's race against Minnesota, Clemson, Michigan State and Oklahoma. In the final regatta before the Pac-12 Championships, Varney helped the Bruins varsity eight crew place second at the Dexter Lake Invitational, beating the likes of Oregon State, USC, Oklahoma, and LMU.
In addition to being part of the UCLA varsity eight boat, Varney has been involved with the USA rowing program, participating in a U23 camp in the summer of 2023.
Joining Varney on this season's All-Pac-12 team are Lucy Burrell (Stanford), Matilda Drewett (Stanford), Annika Jeffery (Stanford), Fiona Mooney (Stanford), Antonia Galland (California), Julia Hunt-Davis (California), Fien van Westreenen (California), Nikki Martincic (Washington), Cillian Mullen (Washington), Evan Park (Oregon State), Celia Marino (USC), and Eliza Dawson (Washington State).
Lusie Bachmann, a junior from Stanford, has been honored as the Pac-12 Women's Rowing Athlete of the Year, while Matilda Drewett, a freshman from Stanford, has been named the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year. Stanford head coach Derek Byrnes was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the third straight year.
