June 12, 2024 | Men's Tennis

TEMPE, Ariz. โ€“ Govind Nanda of the UCLA men's tennis team was named Southwest Regional Senior Player of the Year Wednesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

The award represents Nanda's latest honor in his decorated final year and career with the Bruins. He joined the 100-win club during the 2023-24 campaign, one that saw him reach the NCAA Championships singles tournament for the second time.

An All-Pac-12 First Team selection, Nanda went 12-10 in singles play. Five of his victories on the singles courts came against nationally-ranked foes, including a 6-4, 6-2 decision over No. 3 Murphy Cassone of Arizona State (March 22). Nanda finished the campaign ranked No. 38 on the ITA's singles list and reached No. 22 in early April. He was voted Pac-12 Player of the Week Jan. 30 after beating 18th-ranked Tyler Zink 7-5, 6-1 in a 4-3 win at Oklahoma State. Nanda spent the duration of the season on the top singles court.

Nanda and Alexander Hoogmartens won their final 11 matches as a doubles pair and finished 19-5 overall. The duo clinched a team-high six doubles points, including a 7-6(3) result over Peter Makk and Niroop Vallabhaneni of USC in the deciding contest.

Nanda became the sixth Bruin to collect his region's Senior Player of the Year award, joining Maxime Cressy (2019), Martin Redlicki (2018), Clay Thompson (2014), Benjamin Kohlloeffel (2007) and Tobias Clemens (2004). Nanda was previously tabbed the Southwest Regional Player to Watch in 2020.

The national award winners will be announced Thursday.
