Women's Tennis Trio Named to Academic All-America® Teams

June 04, 2024 | Women's Tennis

AUSTIN, Texas – Tian Fangran, Elise Wagle and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer were named Academic All-America® honorees Tuesday by the College Sports Communicators, joining a group of just five UCLA women's tennis student-athletes who had accomplished the feat previously.

Tian was voted onto the first team, something the program had not seen since Karen Dewis earned at-large praise in 1983. Also receiving accolades were Elise Wagle, who made the second team, and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer, who received third-team recognition.

From 1983-2022, women's tennis Academic All-Americans were honored as part of the at-large presentation. Annette Goulak (second team in 2021), Amanda Basica (third team in 2000), Annica Cooper (second team in 1999) and Dewis (third team in 1984 and first team in 1983) made the teams prior to this year.

Tian, a sophomore psychology major who holds a 3.61 cumulative grade-point average (GPA), had a stellar 2024 season on the heels of her NCAA singles championship in 2023. She had an 18-5 singles record playing exclusively on the top court, beating nine nationally-ranked foes. In doubles play, Tian and Wagle earned the Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year award. The pair climbed to No. 10 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's final set of doubles rankings.

Wagle, a junior economics major who possesses a 3.59 GPA, had a standout singles campaign on top of her doubles success with Tian. No Bruin had more clinching wins than Wagle, who logged eight. Among those deciding victories were road results over No. 7 Pepperdine and No. 11 USC. The latter secured UCLA's third regular-season Pac-12 championship in program history. Wagle has now qualified for the NCAA Championships doubles tournament three times with three different partners (Tian in 2023, Kimmi Hance in 2022 and Elysia Bolton in 2021).

Rounding out the list was Lutkemeyer, a sophomore environmental science major who has a 3.77 GPA. She had a well-rounded year, leading the Bruins in total wins (50), doubles wins (30) and dual-match doubles wins (21) while tying for the team lead in singles wins (20). Lutkemeyer and Hance teamed to go 15-1 on the doubles courts, winning their last 10 decisions. Lutkemeyer was 30-4 overall in doubles play, including 21-2 in dual-match play.
