Track & Field Retains Throws Coach Sean Denard

LOS ANGELES โ Coach Sean Denard is staying in Westwood. The Sherie L. and Donald G. Morrison UCLA Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Joanna Hayes is retaining Denard as an assistant coach to run the UCLA throws program.

Denard was first named to the position of assistant coach on September 24, 2021, and enters his fourth season with the UCLA coaching staff.

"As coach, mentor, and leader of this program and for these student athletes, I want to emphasize the importance of being excellent as we navigate the highest pressure and great stakes that our sport, education and the great city of Los Angeles throws at us on a day-to-day basis," said Denard. "I am confident that with the backing of the great Joanna Hayes that we can find accountability, respect and composure to guide us towards our ultimate goal of elite championship performances at the Big Ten, NCAA, World and Olympic levels."

During the first three seasons of his tenure with the Bruins, UCLA throwers have been highlighted by First-Team All-Americans Mayyi Mahama and Federica Botter; Botter is a two-time Pac-12 champion in the women's javelin throw (2023, 2024). Jacob Wilson, Michael Pinckney,ย Kris Emig, Lea Riedel and Lyvante Su'emai all earned medals at Conference championship meets under Denard's guidance. Denard's throwers have contributed over 100 points at the Pac-12 Championships, earned nearly 40 NCAA First Round Qualifiers, captured nine NCAA All-American Awards and three new school records.

Before UCLA, Denard mentored athletes to an additional 50 Top-10 performances at the NCAA Championships including six gold, two silver and three bronze medals.

Post-collegiately, Denard has also supported athletes to winning five national championships and 23 national level medals while facilitating training for athletes on their way to claiming 5 international medals while competing at the Olympics, World Championships, PANAM Games, Commonwealth Games, NACACs, European Championships, Oceania Games, World University Games, European Team Championships, U23 European Championships, U23 NACAC Championships, U20 PANAM and U20 Worlds Teams.

Denard has also served as Team USA National Coach where he has overseen the collection of 26 medals, including 10 gold and 11 silver medals.

An expert recruiter, Denard has brought in athletes from around the world that would go on to claim another eight individual NCAA titles and more than 30 additional All-American awards.

Denard also serves as a USATF Level II Instructor and earned his second master's degree from UCLA in June of 2023.
