September 01, 2024 | Women's Soccer
Malibu, Calif. โ No. 3 UCLA's shutout and winning streak came to an end after a 1-0 loss at Pepperdine on Sunday afternoon.
ย
Pepperdine (3-2-1) scored the game's only goal in the 70th minute on a header by Peyton Leonard, ending UCLA's shutout streak to start the season at 519 minutes. UCLA totaled 12 shots in the game, but Pepperdine goalkeeper Jillian Medvecky made six impressive saves to keep the Bruins at bay.
ย
UCLA (5-1) had few opportunities early in the game until the 16th minute when Meg Boade had a look in front of goal that was saved by Medvecky, a recurring theme for the Bruin on the day. In the 21st minute, Maya Evans earned a free kick just outside the box after a hard foul on a goal-scoring opportunity. Her free kick went around the wall but was tipped out by Medvecky for a corner kick. Sophie Reale provided a spark off the bench, recording three shots in 12 minutes of play in the half, including two shots that were saved in the 36th and 39th minutes.
ย
Both teams pressed had good chances early in the second half. In the 53rd minute, Lilly Reale made a good defensive stop on a shot by Tabitha LaParl that was on target in front of the goal. The Bruins earned a corner kick in the 57th minute after Jordan Geis' shot was blocked, and Reale's long-distance shot following the corner was tipped out of bounds by a leaping Medvecky.
ย
But it was Leonard who broke through for Pepperdine at 69:08, dropping in a header to UCLA goalkeeper Ryan Campbell's left following a free kick.
ย
UCLA nearly equalized in the 72nd minute, when Taylor Cheatham won a ball with Medvecky off her line, but her shot hit the side netting. In the 78th minute, Lily Boyden had a hard shot that Medvecky dove to save. The Bruins had one last chance in the final minute, but Evans' long distance shot went wide.
ย
Campbell finished with two saves in the match, including a 19th minute save on a hard save by Tabitha LaParl.
ย
The Bruins will look to rebound on Thursday, Sept. 5 at Tennessee.
