UCLA Shuts Out Indiana, 1-0
September 19, 2024 | Women's Soccer
Bloomington, Ind. - With several of their missing pieces back in play, UCLA remained unbeaten in Big Ten Conference play with a 1-0 win at Indiana. Sofia Cook scored the game's only goal in the 28th minute, and the Bruin defense notched their seventh shutout of the year.
The Bruins (7-2-1, 2-0-0 in the Big Ten) welcomed back Mexico Under-20 National Team players America Frias, Val Vargas and Mariangela Medina after their FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup run. Frias started for the Bruins, and Vargas played 73 minutes. Also seeing increased minutes after missing time with injuries were Cook and Sunshine Fontes.ย
UCLA had three shots on goal in the first 26 minutes. Quincy McMahon had a good look at goal in the eight minute but had her shot saved by Indiana goalkeeper Jamie Gerstenberg. Paloma Daubert also had a hard shot saved by Gerstenberg in the 14th minute. Gerstenberg saved a shot by Cook off a corner kick in the 26th minute but had no chance on Cook's second shot at 27:43, a rocket from outside the box that went top shelf for her second goal of the season.ย
The Bruins outshot the Hoosiers (5-2-1, 0-2-0) by an 11-5 count and had a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Goalkeeper Ryan Campbell recorded three saves, and Gerstenberg finished with five. ย
Next up for UCLA is a Sunday afternoon matchup at Purdue. The 1pm ET/10am PT match will be broadcast on B1G+.
