LOS ANGELES – In a match that featured five third sets, the No. 25 UCLA men's tennis team fell 4-0 against No. 13 Stanford Sunday afternoon at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Cardinal (5-1) claimed the doubles point by way of tiebreaker before Samir Banerjee, Henry von der Schulenburg and clincher Hudson Rivera added singles wins. Emon van Loben Sels of the Bruins (2-4) was serving for victory when the overall decision was settled. UCLA's Gianluca Ballotta and Giacomo Revelli were also in third sets.
The tandem of van Loben Sels and Spencer Johnson got UCLA off on the right foot, beating Nico Godsick and Alex Razeghi 6-4 on Court 1. The Bruin pair is 4-1 in dual-match play. Stanford answered on Court 2, where Banerjee and von der Schulenburg outlasted No. 10 Alexander Hoogmartens/Aadarsh Tripathi 7-5. A tiebreaker decided Court 3 and the initial point, with Rivera and Max Basing ultimately prevailing 7-6(5) versus Ballotta and Revelli.
In the only straight-set result of the day, von der Schulenburg bested Hoogmartens 6-4, 6-4 on Court 3. Each of the remaining contests went to a third set.
Next to finish was the top-40 matchup on Court 1. No. 35 Banerjee outlasted No. 13 Johnson 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in that one, bringing Stanford's lead to 3-0.
With van Loben Sels nearing victory and the other two matches still up for grabs, Rivera topped No. 93 Tripathi 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 on Court 4.
The Bruins return to action Sunday, Feb. 16, when Pepperdine visits LATC. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT.
