LOS ANGELES – The No. 6 UCLA women's tennis team held off No. 18 California in a 4-2 decision Sunday at Los Angeles Tennis Center. Relocated due to rain in Northern California, the match was delayed 30 minutes due to wet courts.

Elise Wagle won in clinching fashion for the Bruins (3-0), beating Lan Mi in three sets. Also triumphant for UCLA in singles play were Kate Fakih and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer, who made her first career appearance on the No. 1 singles court. The Bruins also claimed the doubles point. The Golden Bears (1-2) received singles wins from Jessica Alsola and Greta Greco Lucchina.

The 36th-ranked pair of Lutkemeyer and Ahmani Guichard stayed perfect in dual-match play, beating Alsola and Greco Lucchini 6-1 on Court 2 to start matters. Cal answered on the top court, where Mao Mushika and Katja Wiersholm got the better of No. 4 Fakih/Olivia Center in a 6-3 result.

On Court 3, Wagle and Bianca Fernandez teamed to take four of the first five games. No. 48 Mi/Berta Passola Folch pulled even, but had its serve broken at 4-4. Fernandez and Wagle capitalized on that, tacking on a hold for the day's first point.

With the back courts still wet, Courts 1-3 started first in singles play. Court 1 featured a top-40 matchup of No. 35 Wiersholm and No. 38 Lutkemeyer. Lutkemeyer continued to find success against nationally-ranked foes, recording her ninth victory in 12 finished contests. The 6-2, 6-1 decision brought her overall record to 16-4.

Alsola momentarily cut Golden Bears' deficit in half when she knocked off Guichard 6-3, 6-4 on Court 4. The Bruins' lead was soon extended back to two points thanks to No. 41 Fakih, who bested No. 71 Mushika 6-4, 6-4 on Court 3. Fakih matched Lutkemeyer in recording her third straight dual-match singles win without a loss. The freshman leads UCLA with 17 total singles victories.

Greco Lucchina took down Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 on Court 6 to again trim Cal's deficit to one. No. 53 Wagle would take control of her third set with No. 63 Mi, however, picking up a break out of the gate and riding that to a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win. Wagle led the team with eight match-clinching points in 2024.

The Bruins next travel to the state of Illinois for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Play on the campuses of Illinois and Northwestern is scheduled for Feb. 7-10.
