PHOENIX, Ariz. – The No. 2 UCLA men's volleyball program saw its 10-match winning streak snapped on Friday night by Grand Canyon University, 3-0. Set scores were 19-25, 19-25, and 21-25.
Zach Rama led the way for UCLA with 10 kills, while Cameron Thorne and Cooper Robinson posted nine kills each.
Trent Moser paced GCU with 13 kills on 26 swings.
Andrew Rowan recorded a monster solo block to put the Bruins up 9-7 early on in the first set. In addition to his 35 assists, Rowan finished the match with two total blocks.
Cameron Thorne marked his return to Grand Canyon with a huge kill to put UCLA up 13-11 midway through the set. The Lopes then went on a run of their own, and took a 17-14 lead, forcing a Bruins timeout.
GCU then took the first set 25-19, as the Bruins struggled from the service line, committing nine service errors in the first set as GCU took a 1-0 set lead into the second set.
As for the second set, the Bruins and Lopes battled back and forth early on before GCU took an 8-5 advantage and then a 12-6 lead before Rama slammed home a kill to make it 12-8 Lopes in the set.
Matthew Edwards muscled home a kill to make it 15-12 GCU. The two sides traded points before a Thorne block made it 20-17 in favor of GCU, causing a Lopes timeout.
Out of the timeout the Lopes extended their advantage to 23-18 before a service error gave GCU a 25-19 win in set two and a 2-0 set lead heading into the third set.
As for the third set the Lopes opened up a 6-3 advantage before Sean Kelly served up an ace to bring the Bruins within one, 8-7, and then Robinson put the Bruins up 10-9 off an assist from Rowan. UCLA then took a 12-10 lead courtesy of a net violation from GCU.
The Lopes tied it at 14-14 and then took a 15-14 advantage, as the sides went to a media timeout. Thorne then put UCLA up 19-18 before Rama extended the lead to 21-19 with his 10th kill of the night.
Unfortunately for the Bruins, the Lopes rattled off six straight points to win the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.
The loss snaps UCLA's 11-match win streak and marks the first Bruins loss since February 12 when the Bruins fell to Long Beach State.
