LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. -- No. 2 UCLA (23-3) split a pair of duals against nationally-ranked teams on Friday at the Best of the West tournament on Main Beach in Laguna Beach, Calif. The Bruins lost their first dual to No. 6 Cal Poly (18-2), 3-2, before responding with a 5-0 sweep over No. 19 Washington (11-11). The loss to the Mustangs was the first in program history as the Bruins fell to 15-1 in the series. The Bruins improved to 15-0 overall against the Huskies.
In the first dual against Cal Poly, it all came down to a third set on court two where Izzy Martinez and Logan Walter outlasted UCLA's Natalie Myszkowsi and Peri Brennan, 21-18, 15-21, 20-18.
In the second dual against UW, the Bruins pulled off a 5-0 sweep. Alexa Fernandez and Kaley Mathews sealed the win on court five with a 21-17, 21-17 win over UW's Hannah Doyle and Alina Urzua for the Bruins' 10th sweep of the year.
UP NEXT: The Bruins will complete the Best in the West tournament on Saturday, April 5, against No. 17 Hawai'i (2:00 p.m. PT) and No. 3 LMU (4:00 p.m. PT).
