No. 3 UCLA Beats No. 14 UC San Diego in Four Sets

LOS ANGELES – The No. 3 UCLA men's volleyball earned their first win at home in the squads home-opener on Thursday night, taking down No. 14 UC San Diego in four sets. Set scores on Thursday were 25-22, 25-14, 24-26, 31-29.

Zach Rama and Ido David finished with double-digit kills each on the night, Rama had 15 and David had 11, while Andrew Rowan tallied 45 assists and eight digs on the night to pace the Bruins' attack.  

After falling in the third set the Bruins (3-1) rallied back in the fourth set but faced six set points from UC San Diego (6-1), and battled through all of them to take the fourth set 31-29 on Thursday.

With the Bruins down 29-28 in the fourth set UCLA went on a 3-0 scoring run to earn the win. First a service error tied it at 29-29, before Rama hammered home an ace for the Bruins to make it match point UCLA. On the next play UCSD got the ball back over the net where Rowan set up Cooper Robinson for the kill, which Robinson took, earning UCLA the 31-29 set four win and the match.





Ido David recorded his first ace of the match to make it a 5-3 UCLA advantage. Cameron Thorne then got the Bruins to 12 points with a huge block from the middle, putting UCLA up 12-9 midway through the first set.

David tallied his second ace of the match to put the Bruins up 14-10 before his third of he set put UCLA on top 21-17. Later on, UC San Diego made it 24-22 Bruins before Rama earned his third kill of the set to earn the Bruins the first set, 25-22.
In the second set UCLA jumped out to a 4-0 lead and continued to put pressure on the Tritons throughout the second set and took an 11-5 lead midway through the set.

Cameron Thorne forced a Triton timeout after UCLA's seventh ace of the match, stretching UCLA's advantage to 15-6. Spencer Graves came into the game and served up UCLA's ninth ace of the match to put UCLA up 21-9. The Bruins continued to run away with the set and eventually took the set 25-14 to take a 2-0 lead headed to the third set.

UC San Diego responded strongly to begin the third set and stormed out to a 5-0 lead before the Bruins slowly worked their way back into the set.

UCLA made it a 23-22 Triton advantage before the Tritons earned a kill to make it 24-22. The Bruins then earned back-to-back points to push the set at 24-24.

UC San Diego rallied off two straight points to take the second set 26-24, and make it a 2-1 UCLA advantage headed to the fourth set.

In the fourth set the Tritons put the pressure on the Bruins, taking a 14-9 lead before the Bruins battled back to make it 15-15. During the 6-1 run, Ido David rattled off his fourth ace of the night, and Robinson followed suit two points later with an ace of his own to tie the set at 15-15.

UCSD made it a 19-16 match before the Bruins earned back-to-back points to make it 19-18  and then tied it at 21-21 courtesy of an attack error from the Tritons. Thorne then hammered home his seventh kill of the match to give the Bruins a 22-21 lead.

The Tritons responded, taking a 24-22 lead before the Bruins earned two points in a row to tie it at 24-24.
 
On the next point, UCLA took the lead before the Tritons tied it again. UCSD then took a 26-25 lead before the Bruins sided-out to make it 26-26. The Tritons then earned the next point before the Bruins responded to make it a 28-28 set. Zach Rama then recorded an ace to put the Bruins up 29-28 and on match point before UCLA earned three points in a row to take the set 31-29 and the match 3-1.

Up Next: UCLA hits the road to take on No. 15 CSUN in UCLA's fourth top-15 match in a row. First serve is set for 6 p.m. PT from Northridge. Fans can watch via ESPN+.
