Men's Tennis Earns NCAA Bids at ITA Regionals

TEMPE, Ariz. โ The UCLA men's tennis team collected all three NCAA Championships berths awarded at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, with junior Spencer Johnson earning singles and doubles spots. The Kiwanis Tennis Center hosted the six-day event.
Johnson and Rudy Quan picked up their spots after each advanced to the singles final, which was not played after the automatic bids were distributed. Johnson also teamed with Emon van Loben Sels to win the doubles title and a trip to November's NCAA Championships in Orlando, Fla.
The 19th-ranked Johnson faced his toughest singles test in the quarterfinals, where he outlasted No. 89 Alexander Rozin of Arizona in a 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3 result. Johnson beat No. 124 Shu Matsuoka of Arizona State 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinal round. It was in that round that Quan beat 70th-ranked teammate Aadarsh Tripathi 6-2, 6-1 to lock up his place in the NCAA field. Johnson will be making a return trip to the singles side of the event, while Quan is set for his debut.
The eighth-ranked combination of Johnson and van Loben Sels defeated the Pepperdine pair of David Fix/Gustavo Ribeiro de Almeida 7-5, 6-1 in the championship showdown. Tripathi and Quan teamed to reach the quarterfinals, but were eliminated in a tiebreaker.
