UCLA, USC Tie 0-0 in Women's Soccer's Crosstown Showdown
October 26, 2025 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES -ย No. 18 UCLA wrapped up its regular season with a 0-0 tie against crosstown rival USC on Sunday afternoon, securing the No. 3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament with its 12th shutout of the year.ย
The Bruins outshot USC, 19-6, but could not get a shot past Trojan goalkeeper Bella Grust, who tied her season-high with seven saves. UCLA's top-ranked defense held the Trojans to zero shots on goal.ย
Although the Bruins did not possess the ball as they were used to in the first half, they did accumulate some dangerous chances. In the 14th minute, Grace Shank sent a long ball in to Bella Winn, who got ahead of the defense and into a 1v1 with Grust but pushed her shot high. UCLA had two opportunities in the 19th minute, with Kara Croone being sent two balls into the box. Both times, Grust intercepted the pass before Croone could get to it, and they were both cleared away by a USC defender. In the final minute of the first half, Leena Powell took a hard shot on frame, but her shot was saved by Grust to keep it 0-0 at the half.
The Bruins increased the energy in the second half, peppering the Trojans with 15 second-half shots. Powell played a nice ball in to Payten Cooper down the right side in the 51st minute, but it was well-defended by the Trojans to get an easy save by Grust. Five minutes later, Powell surged ahead for a goal-scoring opportunity, but Grust came out of her box to save Powell's shot. The same scenario occurred in the 59th minute, with Grust coming up to stop Croone once again. The Trojans nearly scored on a counterattack following that save, however, but Paloma Daubert hustled back to disrupt Jaiden Anderson on the breakaway, and then Jennie Immethun cleared away a shot attempt by Maribel Flores. USC earned a corner with less than 30 seconds to play, but could not get anything in the box before time expired.
"I was not super happy with the first half; I just thought it was a little low energy," said UCLA head coach Margueritte Aozasa. "The second half was much better. We've been battling our demons all season, and we couldn't score again today, but the good news is we can find a solution. But I'm really proud of how we played, especially in the second half."
UCLA's record runs to 10-4-3, 6-2-3 in conference play. USC, which clinched the 10th and final spot in the Big Ten Tournament, moves to 7-6-3, 4-5-2. ย
The Bruins will play No. 6 seed Penn State in the Big Ten quarterfinals for the second-straight year. The match will take place on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 4:30 p.m. PT at Purdue University. ย ย

Counterattack? No problem for our top-ranked defense!
