UCLA Picked Fourth in B1G Preseason Poll, Three Bruins Named Players to Watch

LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA baseball team has been projected to finish fourth in the Big Ten Conference. Additionally, three Bruins have been highlighted as Big Ten Players to Watch, as announced by league officials on Wednesday afternoon.

In its inaugural season in the conference, UCLA was ranked fourth in the Big Ten Preseason Poll. Oregon claimed the top spot, with Nebraska and Indiana following in second and third, respectively.

UCLA's Big Ten Players to Watch included sophomore shortstop Roch Cholowsky, sophomore outfielder Dean West, and junior right-handed pitcher Cody Delvecchio. All three Bruins receive preseason recognition for the first time in their collegiate careers.

Cholowsky is coming off an impressive freshman campaign with a team-leading .308 batting average and eight homers. The Chandler Ariz. native received Second Team Freshman All-American acclaim (Perfect Game) and a Pac-12 Honorable Mention nod. Cholowksy was the lone Bruin to start all 52 games. He was red hot in the closing stages of 2024, slashing .391/.452/.766 with seven home runs and 18 RBIs over the final 16 games of the season. Recently, Cholowsky was named the No.9 shortstop in the country by D1Baseball.com.

West was another standout in his debut season, hitting .295 with an on-base percentage of .456 in his 20 games of action. The sophomore slashed .295/.456/.318 over 44 at-bats with 12 runs, 13 hits, one double, seven RBIs, 12 walks, and one hit-by-pitch. Expected to slot in at the top of the order, West had a .500 OBP in leadoff at-bats last season.

Delvecchio is stepping into the starting rotation after spending the last two seasons in the bullpen. He established himself as one of UCLA's most reliable relievers, boasting a 2.42 ERA during his sophomore year. In his true freshman season, he made a team-high 36 appearances and secured three saves on his way to a Pac-12 Honorable Mention selection in 2023. He was extremely impressive when taking the mound at home, posting a 1.50 ERA over 10 appearances at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Delvecchio was recognized as the No. 73 starting pitcher in the country by D1Baseball.com.

The Bruins begin their 2025 season with a three-game home series against Cal Poly. First pitch of Friday night's season opener (Feb. 14) will take place at 5 p.m. (PT) inside Jackie Robinson Stadium.
