Baseball Hosts Cal Poly for Opening Weekend

LOS ANGELES - This weekend, UCLA baseball opens its 2025 campaign with a three-game home series against Cal Poly beginning on Friday at 5 p.m. PT and continuing on Saturday at 2 p.m. PT and Sunday at 1 p.m. PT. The entire set will be streamed on B1G+, with Nick Koop and Sid Iyer on the call. Fans can also follow along with live stats (StatBroadcast) and receive updates on X (@UCLABaseball).

UCLA is opening the season at home for the 15th consecutive season, and the 22nd time in the last 23 seasons. The Bruins are 14-6 on Opening Day under head coach John Savage (since 2005) and have won their opening series in 10 of the last 12 years. Last year, UCLA opened the season by sweeping Gonzaga in a three-game set in Westwood. The Bruins out-scored the Zags 24-10 for the weekend.

UCLA leads the all-time series against Cal Poly 30-10, including a 7-2 advantage under head coach John Savage. However, when the teams last met in 2021, the Mustangs came out victorious and won the series in San Luis Obispo. Cal Poly has enjoyed winning records and 30+ wins in three of the last four seasons. The Mustangs are coming off a 35-22 (20-10 Big West) season, finishing fourth in the Big West. UCLA sophomore shortstop Roch Cholowsky was named to the Perfect Game Preseason All-Big Ten team. Cholowsky is coming off an impressive freshman campaign with a team-leading .308 batting average and eight homers. The Chandler Ariz. native received Second Team Freshman All-American acclaim (Perfect Game) and a Pac-12 Honorable Mention nod. Cholowksy was the lone Bruin to start all 52 games. He was red hot in the closing stages of 2024, slashing .391/.452/.766 with seven home runs and 18 RBIs over the final 16 games of the season. Recently, Cholowsky was named the No.9 shortstop in the country by D1Baseball.com.

UCLA added 11 newcomers ahead of the 2025 season, including eight freshmen and three transfers. Coach Savage has bolstered his pitching staff with three pitchers joining via the transfer portal. Left-hander Ian May (California) will look to occupy a spot in the starting rotation after logging 20 starts and 90.0 total innings for the Golden Bears. Fellow southpaw Ryan Rissas (UC San Diego) helped lead the Tritons to their first-ever Big West title in 2023. The sophomore slashed .295/.456/.318 over 44 at-bats with 12 runs, 13 hits, one double, seven RBIs, 12 walks, and one hit-by-pitch. Expected to slot in at the top of the order, West had a .500 OBP in leadoff at-bats last season.
- Delvecchio is stepping into the starting rotation after spending the last two seasons in the bullpen. He established himself as one of UCLA's most reliable relievers, boasting a 2.42 ERA during his sophomore year. In his true freshman season, he made a team-high 36 appearances and secured three saves on his way to a Pac-12 Honorable Mention selection in 2023. He was extremely impressive when taking the mound at home, posting a 1.50 ERA over 10 appearances at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Delvecchio was recognized as the No. 73 starting pitcher in the country by D1Baseball.com.
