February 16, 2025 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – The UCLA baseball team showcased another impressive offensive performance, completing the three-game sweep over Cal Poly with 14 hits in a dominant 16-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
UCLA (3-0) outscored the opposition by a 37-4 margin in the series as the pitching staff also shined over the weekend. The Bruins shutout the Mustangs (0-3) in the series finale while holding them scoreless for the final 15 innings of the three-game set.
Landon Stump came up with a masterful outing, keeping Cal Poly off the board in his six innings of one-hit ball. The right-hander recorded five strikeouts and did not allow a hit until the fifth frame. This marks the longest outing of Stump's career.
Dean West dazzled in the leadoff spot, launching his first career home run and reaching base five times as part of 3-for-4 day at the plate. He drove in three runs and scored three times, capping off an outstanding weekend with a slash line of .500/.733/1.000.
Mulivai Levu homered for the second straight contest in another standout performance from the UCLA first baseman, going 3-for-5 with five RBIs and two runs scored. He concluded his weekend 6-for-13 (.462) with two home runs and seven RBIs.
Also enjoying a three-hit day was Phoenix Call, racking up two RBIs and a pair of runs. Cashel Dugger banged out two hits as the Bruins' backstop scored a career-best four runs on Sunday afternoon.
After a scoreless first frame, UCLA pushed across five runs in the bottom of the second to take a commanding lead in the series finale. Back-to-back RBI base hits from Call and West started the rally before Levu's towering three-run blast further extended the Bruins' advantage.
West smashed a line drive over the right field wall for a two-run homer, increasing the lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning. This was the first career home run for the Woodland Hills, Calif. product.
UCLA started to pour it on in the sixth when knocks from West, Levu, Call, Dugger, and Roch Cholowsky fueled a nine-run sixth to push the lead to double-digits.
Cal Randall, Ryan Rissas, and Justin Lee combined to pitch a scoreless seventh, eighth, and ninth to close the door on the series' final game.
The Bruins return to Jackie Robinson Stadium to host BYU on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 5 p.m. PT for its first midweek contest of the season. The game will be available for viewing on B1G+.
