URBANA, Ill. – The third-seeded UCLA women's tennis team beat host and eighth-seeded Illinois 4-1 Sunday evening in ITA National Team Indoor Championships consolation action at Atkins Tennis Center.
Kimmi Hance clinched the team win in three sets. She was also on court for the deciding doubles victory. Also triumphant for the Bruins in singles play were Kate Fakih and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer. Fakih also had a doubles win. Violeta Martinez was victorious for the Fighting Illini (2-5).
The nation's third-ranked pair of Fakih and Olivia Center gave UCLA an advantage in doubles play, claiming the final three games on Court 2 to complete its 6-3 triumph over McKenna Schaefbauer and Kasia Treiber. The all-freshman duo improved to 18-5 overall with its latest victory. Illinois answered shortly thereafter on Court 3, where Martinez and Alice Xu took five of the first six games against Lutkemeyer and Ahmani Guichard en route to a 6-2 result.
The Court 1 matchup of UCLA's Hance/Elise Wagle and Illinois' Kida Ferrari/Megan Heuser needed a tiebreaker. No. 9 Hance/Wagle held a match point at 6-5 and the 61st-ranked Ferrari/Heuser had its own at 7-6. In the end, though, it was the Bruins claiming their seventh ranked win in eight tries. The 7-6(7) decision was their third doubles-point clincher of 2025.
UCLA collected four singles first sets, moving closer to the team win. Straight-set victories by Fakih and Lutkemeyer followed soon after. No. 56 Fakih's second singles win in as many decisions on the trip came by a 6-0, 6-3 margin versus Ferrari on Court 4. No. 17 Lutkemeyer then handed Heuser a 6-3, 6-1 defeat on Court 2. Fakih (19) and Lutkemeyer (17) lead the Bruins in total singles victories since fall tournaments began.
Martinez put the Fighting Illini on the scoreboard with her 6-4, 6-4 win opposite No. 53 Wagle. Illinois tried to chip away further, forcing third sets on Courts 5 and 6. Already in a third set on Court 1, though, Hance took control. Facing off with Schaefbauer, Hance prevailed 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 for her first singles clincher of the season.
UCLA returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 26 against No. 15 Pepperdine at Los Angeles Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT.
