No. 24 Women's Tennis Drops 4-1 Result to No. 5 Michigan

March 22, 2025 | Women's Tennis

LOS ANGELES – The No. 24 UCLA women's tennis team fell 4-1 against No. 5 Michigan in Big Ten Conference play Saturday afternoon at Los Angeles Tennis Center.

The Bruins (6-6, 1-2 Big Ten) earned the doubles point, but could not add to their total in singles competition. Three matches went to third sets, but Reese Miller clinched the overall result for the Wolverines (12-3, 5-0). Also triumphant for Michigan were Piper Charney, Lily Jones and Emily Sartz-Lunde.

The 31st-ranked pair of Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle set the tone for UCLA in doubles play, breaking the serve of Charney/Julia Fliegner twice en route to a 5-1 advantage. A couple holds later, the seniors had prevailed 6-2. With the Court 2 match on serve, Ahmani Guichard and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer closed out theirs on Court 3 in clinching fashion. The Bruin pair's fifth win in six tries was completed with a break of Miller/Bayley Sheinin for a 6-3 result.

No. 29 Lutkemeyer picked up the lone first set for UCLA. No. 22 Charney evened the team score for the Wolverines on Court 3, knocking off No. 78 Hance 6-2, 6-3. The visitors took the lead soon after, with No. 86 Sartz-Lunde taking down No. 64 Wagle by a 6-3, 6-1 margin on Court 4.

The top-40 matchup on Court 2 was next to finish, as No. 34 Jones defeated No. 38 Fakih 7-5, 6-2. Despite their deficit, the Bruins attempted to halt Michigan's momentum. Center and Guichard forced third sets, while Lutkemeyer alternated tiebreakers with No. 3 Fliegner up top. In the end, No. 123 Miller outlasted Center in a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 decision on Court 6.

The Bruins will attempt to bounce back Sunday against Michigan State. First serve from LATC is scheduled for 10 a.m. PT.
