No. 7 Softball Sweeps Maryland Behind 10-1 Victory

March 30, 2025 | Softball

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 7-ranked UCLA softball team exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning to power to a 10-1 mercy-rule victory and Big Ten Conference series sweep over Maryland at UMD Softball Complex Sunday afternoon.

The Bruins (32-5, 7-1 Big Ten) secured their second conference series sweep and 19th mercy-rule victory of the season with today's result. UCLA outscored its opponents this week 35-2.

Junior third baseman Jordan Woolery finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. The performance marked Woolery's third multi-hit and two-double game of the year. Second baseman Savannah Pola and right fielder Kaitlyn Terry both recorded two hits apiece. The Bruins totaled 10 hits, seven of which went for extra bases (five doubles and two home runs.

UCLA led by at least one run until the fifth inning, plating eight off six hits, two walks and an error. Pola and freshman Sofia Mujica delivered the inning's biggest hits with a pair of home runs. After an RBI double from Kaniya Bragg, the Bruins loaded the bases on a fielder's choice groundball hit by Rylee Slimp and walk to Alexis Ramirez. Mujica, entering the game as a pinch hitter, stepped to the plate and launched a grand slam off the first pitch she saw to left field to extend the lead to an insurmountable 7-1.

The blast marked Mujica's second grand slam of the season and UCLA's third as a team.

Freshman starting pitcher Addisen Fisher earned her 11th win of the season in a 5.0-inning complete-game effort. Fisher struck out five while allowing one run, three hits and walking four batters. Fisher is one of 13 pitchers in NCAA Division I and the only freshman in the country to maintain a flawless record (11-0).

UCLA opened the game with straight doubles from the top of the lineup off the bats of Jessica Clements, Pola and Woolery. Pola's two-bagger – her team-leading 13th of the season – scored the first run of the day just three pitches into the ballgame. Woolery knocked home Pola for her 12th double of the season one pitch later to give Fisher an early 2-0 in the first.

The Terrapins (15-18, 3-7 Big Ten) got one run back in the bottom of the second with two doubles of their own. Catcher Sam Bean led off the inning with a double into the right-center gap after fouling off five straight pitches. Shortstop Sammi Woods delivered the RBI later in the inning.

Fisher worked off the Bruins' 2-1 lead for the majority of her outing until the fifth. The only real trouble she faced came in the third inning when she walked two of the first three batters, bringing up Maryland's No. 4 and 5 hitters with one out. The Bend, Ore. native was able to induce a foul out to Woolery at third base and groundout to Pola at second to get out of the jam and strand the pair.

Terry, who earned the win in the circle in game one of the series on Friday, swiped her second stolen base of the weekend in the fifth inning. The two-way athlete also notched her first career two-hit performance on Sunday, going 2-for-3.
