No. 1 UCLA Takes Down Two More Ranked Teams

STANFORD, Calif. -- No. 1 UCLA (13-1) earned a pair of victories over ranked teams on the final day of the inaugural MPSF Midseason Rumble at Stanford's Beach Volleyball Stadium on Saturday, picking up a 5-0 sweep of No. 16 Grand Canyon (8-4) in the afternoon and then rallying for a 3-2 win over No. 9 California in the early evening. The Bruins improved to 8-0 all-time against the Lopes and to 18-0 against the Golden Bears.
In the first dual against GCU, the Bruins went up 1-0 on court two as graduate student Peri Brennan and senior Natalie Myszkowski took down Karynn Garrow and Sophia Hladyniuk in straight sets, 21-14, 21-11.
The Bruins would earn their second point on court four as redshirt freshman Kaley Mathews and freshman Alexa Fernandez defeated the Golden Bears' Madi Bogle and Regan Holmer 21-11, 21-18.
UCLA's court five pair of freshman Harper Cooper and senior Sophie Moore clinched the dual win with a 21-17, 21-13 win over Becca Drake and Michael Wittren.
Redshirt sophomores Ensley Alden and Kenzie Brower put the Bruins up 4-0 with a 21-17, 21-11 win over Rhea Kohl and Ines Piret on court three.
Freshman Sally Perez and junior Maggie Boyd completed the sweep, winning in three sets, 21-11, 21-23, 15-9 over GCU's Katie Keefe and Sarah Edler.
Senior Jessie Smith and graduate Tessa Van Winkle defeated Hailey Hutchings and Mae Manthe in exhibition action on court six, 21-12, 21-18.
In the dual against the Golden Bears, Fernandez and Mathews lost in two tight sets, 21-17, 21-18 to Cal's Jenna Colligan and Christine DeRoos on court four.
Brennan and Myszkowski tied the dual at 1-1, rallying to post a three-set win, 15-21, 21-19, 15-12, on court two over Gia Fisher and Sierra Caffo.
Cal would go up 2-1 with a 23-21, 21-18 win by Ella Sears and Ella Dreibholz over freshman Adelina Okazaki and senior Reagan Hope on court five.
UCLA's court three pair of Alden and Brower held off the Golden Bears' duo of Marilu Pally and Alexandria Young-Gomez in three sets, 21-16, 18-21, 15-7 to tie the dual up at 2-2.
That set up a winner-take-all scenario on court one, where Boyd and Perez clinched the dual win over Cal's Emma Donley and Portia Sherman, 23-21, 16-21, 15-13.
Redshirt freshman Taylor Ford and sophomore Cassie Dodd posted an exhibition win over Mila Bugrincic and Maile Somera, 23-21, 21-17.
UP NEXT: The Bruins return home to host a double-header on Tuesday, March 11, beginning with Concordia University Irvine at 10:00 a.m. PT and ending with Morehead State at 12:00 p.m. PT at Mapes Beach.
