Men's Tennis Has Comeback Try Stopped at USC
April 01, 2025 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's tennis team's six-match winning streak was snapped Tuesday, as it dropped a 4-3 decision to crosstown rival USC in Big Ten Conference action at David X. Marks Tennis Stadium.
The Bruins (8-7, 6-1 in Big Ten play) dug themselves out of a 3-1 hole to tie the score, but Oscar Weightman's three-set victory proved the difference. Aadarsh Tripathi and Emon van Loben Sels each posted two-win days for UCLA, which began the day by claiming the doubles point. The Trojans (11-6, 5-2) rebounded with singles victories by Karl Lee, Peter Makk, Nathan Trouve and Weightman.
In a tightly-contested doubles competition, the pair of Tripathi and Rudy Quan picked up the first break of serve on Court 2 for 5-4. They would hold to beat Weightman and Volodymyr Iakubenko and turn attention to marathons on Courts 1 and 3. On the top court, Makk and Tristan Bradley broke UCLA's Alexander Hoogmartens and Giacomo Revelli for a 7-5 win, but the Bruins quickly took back momentum and the opening point on Court 3.
The contest between van Loben Sels/Gianluca Ballotta and Trouve/Matteo Morazzi stayed on serve until the deciding tiebreaker. There, Ballotta/van Loben Sels held multiple match points before Morazzi/Trouve answered for 6-6. The Bruins took the final two points, though, and the victory. Ballotta/van Loben Sels has won its first six matches as a pair.
UCLA claimed four singles first sets, but USC put the initial three singles points on the board. Lee tied the score with his 6-2, 6-4 performance against Revelli on Court 6. A three-set result on Court 2 was next to finish, as Trouve beat Kaylan Bigun 1-6, 6-0, 6-1. Finally, in the ranked matchup on Court 1, No. 26 Makk outlasted No. 34 Quan 6-4, 6-4.
The Bruins began their climb back when No. 84 van Loben Sels got the better of Iakubenko in a 7-6(4), 6-4 showing. The singles win was van Loben Sels' seventh in as many decisions. No. 118 Tripathi then won his fifth straight singles decision, taking down Morazzi by a 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 margin on Court 5. In the end, though, Weightman overcame Hoogmartens on Court 4 to prevail 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
UCLA's road trip moves to Columbus, Ohio and the Ty Tucker Tennis Center, where No. 3 Ohio State hosts the Bruins Friday at 2 p.m. PT.
