No. 24 Men's Tennis Drops 4-2 Result to No. 14 Illinois

LOS ANGELES โ The 24th-ranked UCLA men's tennis team dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 14 Illinois in Big Ten Conference play Saturday at Los Angeles Tennis Center. Illinois collected the first two and last two points.
Cassius Chinlund and Aadarsh Tripathi pulled the Bruins (13-6, 7-3 Big Ten) level with singles wins. The Fighting Illini (20-5, 9-2) collected the doubles point and singles victories from Adam Jilly, Zach Viiala and clincher Gabriel Debru.
v The doubles matches stayed on serve until Illinois recorded near-simultaneous breaks for 4-2 advantages on Courts 1 and 3. The Fighting Illini rode those to a pair of 6-3 wins, as Viiala/David Bakonyi took down Gianluca Ballotta/Emon van Loben Sels on Court 3 before Debru/Tyler Bowers clinched the point against Tripathi/Andy Nguyen up top.
Each side collected three first sets, with the final one going to Illinois in a tiebreaker. The Fighting Illini lead was soon pushed to 2-0 by Viiala, who defeated Leo von Bismarck 6-1, 6-1 on Court 6.
Chinlund continued to shine in his redshirt-freshman season, beating Sasha Colleu 6-3, 6-3 on Court 4. Chinlund is 13-3 in dual singles matches. He is 17-4 dating back to tournament action and 8-1 in Big Ten contests.
Tripathi then nabbed his first ranked singles victory of the year, besting No. 93 William Mroz 6-4, 7-5 on Court 3. Tripathi has come out on top of back-to-back results on Court 3.
Jilly put Illinois back in front with a comeback effort versus Bengt Reinhard, prevailing 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. With the top-court matchup already in a third set, No. 34 Debru held off No. 24 van Loben Sels 7-6(4), 7-6(3) to seal the decision.
UCLA finishes out the home portion of its regular-season schedule Sunday against Northwestern. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. PT. Senior Day festivities, including a ceremony honoring Ballotta, Tripathi and Will Steinberg, will take place after doubles play.
