No. 10 UCLA Falls to Washington, 5-2

LOS ANGELES -ย The No. 10-ranked UCLA baseball team fell to Washington, 5-2, in the series-opening game on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

UCLA (26-7, 10-3 Big Ten) struggled to manufacture runs, going just 3-for-20 with runners on and 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

Washington (18-17, 9-4 Big Ten) received a solid outing from its starting pitcher, Max Banks (4-2), who allowed just two earned runs over six innings pitched. Issac Yeager shut out the Bruins over the last three frames to earn his fourth save of the season.

Dean West was the bright spot for UCLA at the plate, collecting three hits on the night. Roman Martin also enjoyed a two-hit day offensively, smacking a two-RBI single to provide the Bruins' only runs of the contest.

Phoenix Call and West delivered back-to-back singles to set the table in UCLA's two-run third inning. After both runners advanced on Roch Cholowsky's fly ball to the warning track in left-center field, Martin came up with the important two-out knock to tie the game.

The Huskies regained their lead in the top of the sixth inning, scoring twice to restore their two-run advantage. Washington added another run in its next trip to the plate, extending its lead to three as the game reached the seventh-inning stretch.

UW called on its closer in the bottom of the seventh inning and the right-hander allowed just two hits over three frames to secure a nine-out save. The Bruins brought the top of the order to the plate in the last of the ninth, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity and the visitors came away with the series-opening victory.

The Bruins return to Jackie Robinson Stadium for the second game of the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. PT. Michael Barnett is scheduled to get the start on the mound for UCLA. The game will be available to watch on B1G+.
