April 27, 2025 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES โย The No. 15-ranked UCLA baseball team completed the sweep over Penn State with its 6-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
ย
UCLA (32-11, 16-5 Big Ten) earns its third sweep during Big Ten Conference play and its second league sweep at home.ย
ย
Roch Cholowsky homered for the third consecutive game to bring his season total to 16. UCLA's shortstop racked up three RBIs and scored a pair of runs during his 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
ย
Dean West raised his average above the .330 mark after his two-hit showing. Both Cholowsky and West hit .455 over the weekend series to lead the Bruins' offense.
ย
Landon Stump (4-0) delivered a quality outing on the mound to earn his fourth win of the campaign. The sophomore right-hander tossed 5.1 innings, allowing three runs while striking out a season-high seven batters.ย
ย
The Nittany Lions used a pair of singles to score a run in the top of the first inning. However, UCLA quickly responded with three runs in the bottom half to take the lead. Dean West ignited the rally with a solid base hit to center field. Cholowsky was then hit by a pitch, setting the stage for Mulivai Levu. Battling in a two-strike count, Levu delivered a two-RBI double into the gap. Roman Martin capped off the three-run inning with a scorching ground ball up the middle, allowing Levu to score from second base.
ย
Penn State clawed within one run when Joe Jaconski launched a solo shot in the top of the fourth.
ย
The Bruins restored their two-run advantage in the home half of the fifth when Cholowsky ripped a line drive off the glove of the third baseman, scoring West from third base.
ย
The visitors remained within striking distance when they manufactured a run in the sixth to make the score 4-3.
ย
Following the seventh inning stretch UCLA turned to its star shortstop for some much-needed breathing room when Cholowsky blasted his third home run of the weekend, a two-run homer over the left-center wall. This gave the Bruins a three-run lead after seven innings.
ย
Chris Grouthues was excellent in his relief appearance, throwing 2.2 innings of perfect ball. The southpaw retired all eight hitters he faced to bridge the Bruins to the ninth.
ย
Freshman righty Easton Hawk was tasked with getting the final three outs, and despite running into some trouble by allowing Penn State to place runners on the corner with one out, he induced a 4-6-3 game-ending double play to clinch the win for UCLA. Hawk received his first career save after throwing a scoreless ninth.
ย
The Bruins make the short trip to Loyola Marymount on Tuesday, April 26 at 6 p.m. PT for a midweek contest. The game will be available to watch on ESPN+.
