April 04, 2025 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES -ย The No. 14-ranked UCLA baseball team rolled to a convincing 15-2 mercy rule victory over San Diego on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium, giving Head Coach John Savage his 700thย win at the helm of the Bruins.
ย
With 700 wins at UCLA, Coach Savage ranks second all-time, trailing only Gary Adams (1975-2004) who finished his career with 984 wins. Savage began his head coaching career at UC Irvine, where he notched 88 wins in his first three seasons, bringing his career total to 788. His winning percentage of .599 with the Bruins is the highest among UCLA coaches with over 100 games coached.
ย
UCLA (24-5, 10-2 Big Ten) scored in double-digits for the fourth consecutive game to win its eighth straight contest.
ย
The Bruins recorded 14 hits as a team, using five multi-hit performances to bolster the effort. For the first time this season, all nine starters recorded a hit in the contest.
ย
Dean West, Roman Martin, and Payton Brennan each banged out two hits and drove in a pair of runs to spearhead the offensive onslaught.ย
ย
AJ Salgado provided the biggest blast of the day, a three-run homer to highlight UCLA's five-run first inning. This was Salgado's fifth home run in the last 10 games, bringing his season total to six.
ย
Cashel Dugger and Phoenix Call also enjoyed two-hit days at the plate.
ย
Wylan Moss tossed four innings and surrendered two runs in the first weekend start of his career. He handed the ball off to Ian May (5-1) to start the fifth inning and the left-hander was brilliant in his three scoreless innings of work, facing just two batters over the minimum to notch his fifth win of the campaign. The transfer from California allowed just two hits in his three spotless frames.
ย
UCLA surged into the lead after rallying for five runs in its first trip to the plate. West and Roch Cholowsky each drew walks to lead off the inning and Brennan capitalized with runners in scoring position when he smoked a double down the left-field line to drive in a pair. Hocking drew another free pass before Salgado launched a towering three-run home run off the scoreboard in right-center field, capping the Bruins' explosive five-run inning.
ย
San Diego answered by scoring twice in the second inning, cutting the deficit to three.
ย
The Bruins hung a three-spot in the fourth inning after West and Cholowsky reached base yet again, setting the table for Mulivai Levu, Martin, and Jarrod Hocking who strung together three RBI singles to extend the advantage.
ย
UCLA put the game out of reach in the fifth inning when hits from Dugger, Call, West, and Cholowsky, and Martin sparked a seven-run rally. The Bruins batted around the order, with Dugger contributing two hits in the inning, including an RBI double.
ย
The Bruins shut down the Toreros over the last two frames,ย triggering the mercy rule after amassing a 13-run lead by the end of the seventh inning.
ย
The Bruins will return to Jackie Robinson Stadium for the second game of the series weekend tomorrow at 2 p.m. PT. Michael Barnett is scheduled to get the start for UCLA on the mound. The game will be available to watch on B1G+.
