No. 18 UCLA Belts Five Homers to Complete Sweep Over Illinois, 8-4

May 11, 2025 | Baseball

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.  – The No. 18 UCLA baseball team mashed five home runs as a team to power its way to an 8-4 victory and complete the three-game sweep over Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Illinois Field

With the win, UCLA (37-14, 20-7 Big Ten) is just one game back of Big Ten-leading Iowa going into the final weekend of the regular season.

Phoenix Call delivered a monster day at the plate, crushing two homers as part of a 3-for-4, three-RBI outburst. The sophomore also added a double and reached on a hit-by-pitch, amassing 10 total bases.

Mulivai Levu hit his first long ball in over a month to bring his season total to 11. UCLA's first baseman went 2-for-5 with a pair RBIs.

Roch Cholowsky belted his team-leading 18th home run of the season, while Roman Martin added his sixth homer of the year.

Despite issuing 11 walks and plunking two Illinois (27-22, 12-15 Big Ten) batters, UCLA's pitching staff managed to minimize the damage to earn the win.

Two second inning home runs opened the scoring for UCLA. Martin's 424-foot blast marked the Bruins' first hit of the ballgame then Call followed with a two-run bomb to cap the three-run frame.

UCLA used another big fly to add to its lead in the third when Levu crushed a two-run shot to the opposite field. Levu's 11th homer of the season was his first since April 1.

Call crushed his second homer of the game in the top of the fourth inning, a towering two-run shot to push the Bruins' lead to seven.

Landon Stump (5-0) danced out of danger repeatedly to keep Illinois off the board through four innings. After stranding two runners in the first, he induced a 6-4-3 double play and a strikeout to escape the second.

His biggest test came in the fourth, when he left two runners in scoring position by recording a clutch strikeout and a pop-up. Despite issuing four walks and plunking a batter, the right-hander's poise kept the Illini at bay.

Stump dominated through five scoreless frames, scattering two hits and fanning five to notch his fifth victory.

Roch Cholowsky joined the home run barrage by ambushing a 1-0 offering and parking it just inside the left-field foul pole for UCLA's fifth round tripper of the contest.

The Bruins' wildness on the mound finally caught up to them in the seventh, as four walks set up a four-run inning for Illinois to cut the lead in half.

UCLA ran into some more trouble in the eighth and Head Coach John Savage turned to freshman Easton Hawk to get the final four outs. The hard-throwing righty need just one pitch to escape the inning, then faced just one batter over the minimum in the ninth to clinch the win.

UCLA will host Northwestern for the final series of the regular season beginning on Thursday, May 15 at 4 p.m. PT. The game will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.
