Naomi Johnson Named Big Ten Women's Track Athlete of the Week

May 07, 2025 | Track & Field

UCLA junior sprinter Naomi Johnson has been selected as the Big Ten Women's Track Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Johnson becomes the program's first-ever recipient of a weekly award from the Big Ten Conference.

The Eastvale, Calif. native was a critical part of UCLA's triumph over crosstown rival USC on Sunday, as the Bruins notched the program's first sweep in the annual dual meet since 2013.

Over the course of the meet, Johnson established a trio of UCLA all-time top-10 times, including a school-record in the 4x100 relay.

She opened up the competition by running the second leg of that relay, teaming up with Yanla Ndjip-Nyemeck, Kaylen Fletcher, and Taylor Snaer to finish that race in 43.03, shaving .36 seconds off the previous school record.

Then in the afternoon she scored in both the 100m dash (11.28) and 200m dash (22.91), winning the latter and securing the No. 8 time in school history in both events.

Johnson is the second Bruin to earn accolades for the dual meet performance, as Jeremy Zammit was selected as the UCLA Student-Athlete of the Week after taking the lead in the men's long jump on his final attempt and winning the event to score the meet-clinching points for the Bruin men.

Overall, UCLA defeated USC by a score of 92-71 on the women's side, and 82-81 on the men's side. The UCLA women's 92 points marked the highest team score in the dual meet since 2007.
