UCLA Falls to Arkansas, 7-3, in MCWS Elimination Game
June 17, 2025 | Baseball
OMAHA, Neb. โ The No. 15-seeded UCLA baseball team saw its 2025 postseason run come to an end after absorbing a 7-3 loss to No. 3-seeded Arkansas on Tuesday evening in a Men's College World Series elimination game at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
The Razorbacks (51-14) never trailed in the contest, going ahead with a two-spot in the bottom of the first and ultimately building a 7-0 lead through eight innings.
UCLA (48-18) broke up the shutout with three runs in the ninth. The Bruins were playing their second game of the day, after having their winner's bracket content against LSU โ which started on Monday night โ suspended until Tuesday morning due to weather delays.
The Bruins close the season with the fifth-most wins in program history at 48. UCLA was making its sixth appearance in Omaha, and first since winning the National Championship in 2013.
Sophomore left fielder Dean West and sophomore center fielder Payton Brennan had two base hits apiece to pace the Bruin offense against Arkansas.
Sophomore first baseman Mulivai Levu sparked the ninth-inning rally for UCLA, leading off that frame with a triple into the right field corner. He came around moments later when right fielder AJ Salgado hit a cue ball down the third base line that got under the glove of Arkansas's Brent Iredale.
UCLA would go on to add two further runs, one coming when a swinging-bunt single from Brennan led to errant throw from Razorback pitcher Will McEntire, and another on a wild pitch that allowed Brennan to score from third.
Prior to that, the Bruins' previous best chances to break through came in the first and eighth innings.
UCLA got the first two batters of the game aboard, and later loaded the bases with one out to threaten in the first. However, the Bruins got a bit of a tough break as Salgado hit a laser the opposite way that went for a line out to short, and then saw the inning come to a close when West was called out while trying to steal home on a razor-close call.
The Bruins later parlayed a walk and a base hit from West into a two-on, one-out threat in the eighth, but that chance was snuffed out by a 6-3 double play.
Arkansas had four players finish with multiple hits, including Wehiwa Aloy and Logan Maxwell. Aloy put his team up for good with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning, and later added an RBI triple to make it 3-0 for Arkansas in the third. Maxwell stretched the lead to 5-0 with a two-run double in the seventh.
UCLA employed seven pitchers over the course of the contest. The Bruins got a four-inning start out of Cody Delvecchio, who was making his first appearance since March 28, and he yielded just three runs during his outing. Right-hander Cal Randall was the lone UCLA reliever to toss a full frame, striking out a pair and allowing no hits over his 1 1/3 innings of work.
Arkansas starter Zach Root earned the win after turning in five scoreless innings. The southpaw allowed just three hits. Right-hander Aidan Jimenez followed with three shutout relief innings.
