No. 4 UCLA Downed by No. 19 BYU, 1-0
August 23, 2025 | Women's Soccer
The Cougars (2-0-1) were awarded a penalty kick in the 14th minute after a video review, calling Grace Shank for a foul in the box against Mika Krommenhoek. Ellie Walbruch took the penalty kick and shot to the right of UCLA goalkeeper Daphne Nakfoor. The Bruin freshman guessed correctly and got a piece of it but was unable to prevent it from going into the back of the net.
The goal stood for the rest of the game despite UCLA outshooting BYU, 19-11 overall and 12-4 in the second half. The Bruins had just three shots on goal. Their best scoring opportunity came in the 84th minute on a bender by Lexi Wright that was saved on a diving effort by BYU goalkeeper Paiton Collins. Emma Egizii also had a good look in the 52nd minute, lofting a shot that Collins had to leap to save. UCLA did not get its first shot on goal until the 40th minute, a shot by Val Vargas that was easily saved by Collins. The Bruins also had a few breakaway opportunities shut down by BYU's defense.
BYU had a chance to double its lead in the 73rd minute. After a corner kick, Nakfoor made an incredible save on a header by Avery Frischknecht, stopping the shot just before it crossed the goal line. Nakfoor made another save on the Cougars' subsequent corner kick, jumping up to grab another header by Frischnknecht. In the 77th minute, the Bruin defense shut down another scoring opportunity. Walbruch's pass was stopped in front of the box by Shank, and Sophie Sivulich's rebound shot was cleared by Jennie Immethun.
Nakfoor finished the game with two saves, while Collins had three for BYU.
The loss was UCLA's second consecutive this week by a 1-0 count. Both losses have come against ranked teams.
The Bruins (1-2) will next host Long Beach State on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7pm.
