LOS ANGELES - No. 4 UCLA opened Big Ten Conference play with a 2-0 shutout win over Oregon.
The Bruins (5-2, 1-0 in the Big Ten) scored both goals on penalty kicks in the second half. Redshirt senior Emma Egizii put UCLA ahead in the 58th minute, firing the penalty kick past Oregon goalkeeper Caeley Goldstein for her second goal of the season. Freshman Leena Powell earned the penalty after being fouled in the box after Jennie Immethun hit her with a long pass down the right side.
Senior Lily Boyden earned the Bruins' second penalty kick in the 75th minute after being fouled in the box during a shot attempt. Sophomore Bella Winn stepped up to take the penalty kick and converted for her team-leading third goal of the season.
UCLA's defense shut down Oregon (2-5-1, 0-1-0), allowing just three shots and one shot on goal. Daphne Nakfoor and Mariangela Medina combined for the shutout, UCLA's fourth consecutive and fifth in seven games. Medina had the Bruins' only save in the 59th minute, stopping a shot by Taylor Bryan. Goldstein totaled two saves for the Ducks, and Gia Kiesling had one as the Bruins recorded 12 shots in total.
"I thought our second half performance was a lot more indicative of what we've been trying to do," said UCLA head coach Margueritte Aozasa. "The criticism we had at halftime was that the tempo was just too slow. We were so content just keeping the ball and not really trying to be dangerous, so the second half was really an emphasis on that. I'm really proud we were able to get everybody on the field tonight and get that experience in conference play. Sometimes it's hard to do that."
The Bruins will take to the road next week to face Michigan State on Sept. 18 and Michigan on Sept. 21.
