Bruins lose doubles but rebound strong in singles play.

LOS ANGELES - After falling behind 1-0 following doubles the No. 24 UCLA men's tennis team kicked it into gear in singles play, sweeping all six positions for a 6-1 victory over visiting Wisconsin at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Friday. With the win, the Bruins remain undefeated in Big Ten play at 4-0 (10-3 overall). The Badgers see their record fall to 11-4 and 2-3 in conference action.

Doubles play went down to the wire, as the Badgers needed to squeak out a tiebreak victory at Court 1 to secure the point. Prior to that, Wisconsin pulled out a 6-4 win at Court 3.

Oddly enough, UCLA's lone doubles win of the afternoon came at Court 2, where an injury to Bruin senior Gianluca Ballotta had halted play for several minutes. With the Bruins leading 4-2, a visibly hobbled Ballotta came back on court and decided to give it a go, as he and partner Emon van Loben Sels gutted out two more wins for an eventual 6-3 UCLA victory.

As dramatic as doubles as, singles play was fairly routine, with UCLA taking first-set wins at all six courts. A pair of identical 6-3, 6-2 wins by van Loben Sels (Court 3) and Spencer Johnson (Court 1) quickly gave UCLA a 2-1 advantage.

Next off was Bruin junior Andy Nguyen at Court 4, as he dispatched of Edouard Aubert, 7-5, 6-2.

The clinching match came down to a race between freshman Cassius Chinlund at Court 6 and Aadarsh Tripathi next door at Court 5, as both had match points within minutes of each other. Chinlund would get the clinch, downing Matthew Fullerton, 6-1, 7-5 to give the Bruins an insurmountable 4-1 advantage.

With the match already decided, wins by Tripathi and Rudy Quan (Court 2) rounded out the Bruin victories. Quan fought off a pair of match points in the match tiebreaker, eventually overcoming Patrik Meszaros, 7-5, 4-6, (12-10).

Next up for the Bruins is a Sunday match against Nebraska at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at Noon.
