LOS ANGELES – The No. 10 UCLA softball team defeated Indiana, 7-2, Saturday night at Easton Stadium to secure its fourth Big Ten Conference series win of the season.
The Bruins (32-5, 12-2 Big Ten) hit three home runs – two by Megan Grant and one by Aleena Garcia – and set a program single-season record with 110 homers, surpassing the previous mark of 108 set in 2010. UCLA is currently averaging 2.97 home runs per game.
Grant recorded her eighth career multi-homer game and increased her Big Ten-leading season total to 25.
Cable displayed incredible resilience in the circle. She worked out of early trouble in the third inning after Indiana placed its first two batters on base. Cable responded by striking out Avery Parker before fielding a sharply hit grounder and starting a 1-5-3 double play to end the inning.
After allowing a solo home run to Ellie Goins in the fourth, Cable rebounded by striking out the next batter in a 12-pitch sequence and inducing a groundout to Garcia to end the frame. Garcia fielded the ball deep in the 5-6 hole on a backhand and threw to first for the final out.
Garcia made two other stellar defensive plays. In the top of the fifth, she flew into shallow left field for a diving catch. The next inning, she prevented a runner from reaching scoring position by fielding a high chopper and sprinting to the second base bag for a force out.
Grant added her second solo homer in the fifth, and Garcia followed later in the inning with a two-run shot to right field.
Jordan Woolery capped the scoring in the sixth with a two-run double to right-center field.

Freshman Natalie Cable turned in the best outing of her young career, tossing her first seven-inning complete game victory. She limited the Hoosiers (27-9, 7-5 Big Ten) – the conference's No. 2 slugging team – to two runs on five hits, with three hit batters and one walk.
