LOS ANGELES – The No. 1-ranked UCLA baseball team cruised to an 8-4 win over Loyola Marymount on Tuesday night at Page Stadium.
The Bruins (44-4, 24-0 Big Ten) have now won 15 straight games over the Lions (12-38, 3-18 WCC).
UCLA's offense was paced by multi-hit efforts from Phoenix Call and Trey Gudoy, while the pitching staff delivered a collective gem, six Bruins logged scoreless outings, the team issued no walks, and the staff piled up 11 strikeouts. Offensively, UCLA did not strike out once.
Angel Cervantes (4-1) earned his fourth win of the season with two innings of work, allowing no earned runs and striking out two.
CJ Bott followed with two hitless frames and a pair of strikeouts, and Mack Edwards impressed in just his second collegiate appearance, punching out two in a dominant scoreless inning.
Roch Cholowsky, Roman Martin, Dominic Cadiz, and Kasen Khansarinia each added a hit for the Bruins.
UCLA jumped on LMU early with a three-run first inning that chased the Lions' starter. Two walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, allowing Dean West to score the opening run on a wild pitch. Payton Brennan followed with a sacrifice fly to double the lead, and Gudoy capped the frame with a two-out RBI single through the left side.
The Bruins tacked on another in the second as Martin smoked a two-out double off the left-field wall, stretching the lead to four.
The Lions got a run back in the bottom half of the second, capitalizing on an error and a wild pitch to score their first run of the game.
UCLA answered with another three-run third despite not recording a hit in the inning. Gudoy reached on an error, and walks to Cadiz and Call loaded the bases. Khansarinia was hit by a pitch to force in a run, an RBI groundout added another, and a wild pitch pushed the lead to six.
UCLA added another run in the fifth when Call ripped a line drive into the gap and raced to third for a triple, then scored on Khansarinia's sacrifice fly to extend the lead to seven.
LMU punched back in the fifth, with Jordan Ortiz drilling a three-run homer to make it a four-run game.
The UCLA bullpen handled the rest, as Edwards, Jake Swenson, Cal Randall, and Justin Lee each delivered a scoreless inning to keep LMU off the board and lock down the win.
The Bruins return to Jackie Robinson Stadium on Friday, May 8 at 7 p.m. PT to open a three-game series against Oregon. The game will air nationally on Big Ten Network.
