LOS ANGELES – Rising senior Spencer Johnson of the UCLA men’s tennis team will compete in US Open men’s singles qualifying after receiving a wild card Tuesday. The qualifying tournament will be played Aug. 24-27 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
Johnson’s current ATP singles ranking sits at 445, a number that has risen from 967 on May 25. He has had a successful summer on the ITF and Challenger levels, winning three titles and reaching four additional semifinals.
Johnson won three men’s singles titles during the SoCal Pro Series, part of the $15,000 ITF World Tour/USTA Pro Circuit. His Southern California run started in Irvine June 15-21, continued in Claremont June 22-28 and wrapped up in Santa Fe July 6-12. Johnson added a doubles championship alongside teammate Emon van Loben Sels in Irvine.
At the July 12-19 Lincoln Challenger, Johnson beat world No. 111 (currently No. 93) Coleman Wong of Hong Kong 6-3, 7-6(2) for a final spot. Johnson would be outlasted there by former world No. 17 Bernard Tomic of Australia after claiming the first set. Another run followed at the July 28-Aug. 9 Lexington Open, as Johnson advanced through qualifying into the semifinals. He beat four players ranked in the top 400 of that week’s ATP singles rankings.
Johnson posted an overall singles record of 15-10 in 2025-26, earning a spot in the NCAA Championships singles tournament along the way. He finished No. 55 in the ITA singles rankings and was slotted at a season-best No. 19. Johnson spent a majority of dual play on Court 1 and earned a thrilling three-set win there against USC’s Branko Djuric that sealed a 4-3 result over the crosstown-rival Trojans. Johnson was named an All-Big Ten Second Team honoree. He also reached 100 career victories across singles and doubles matches in 2026.
