UCLA Takes Down No. 11 Virginia 2-1 to Open 2026 Season

The UCLA men's soccer team defeated No. 11 Virginia on the road 2-1 to open the 2026 season on Thursday.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The UCLA men’s soccer program opened the 2026 season with a 2-1 win at No. 11 Virginia. Transfers Logan Hall and Zach Neuls provided the goals for the Bruins in the win.

Ander Marticorena led the Bruins (1-0-0) with three shots, with all three coming on target, while Hall and Neuls supplied the goals. Ryan Tiltack recorded two huge saves in net for the Bruins. Marco Dos Santos recorded three shots to lead the Cavaliers (0-1-0).

Fifth-year senior Cameron Arnold got the start at striker for the Bruins and had multiple looks at goal throughout the opening half. The transfer recorded three shots throughout the opening half.

Victor Ciaurriz had a chance flash past the far post with 15 minutes to go in the opening half, as the Bruins searched for an opening goal.    

Virginia’s best chance of the first half came midway through. After a Mathis Richter foul outside of the UCLA box, Virginia’s Arnold Matshazi stepped up to take the free kick. He curled a shot towards the bottom corner but sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Tiltack got a glove to it to push the ball wide of the post, keeping the score at 0-0.

Arnold was played through on goal by Nixon in the 32nd minute before playing the ball across the face of goal to de la Vibora, who had a shot attempt blocked, and the game stayed scoreless.  

UCLA’s persistence in front of goal paid off in the 38th minute. After the Bruins won a corner, Amaro took the corner quickly to Finot Pie, who gave the ball back to Amaro. The junior from Spain then lofted the ball into the box, where Zach Neuls got his head to it and found the side netting to give UCLA a 1-0 advantage.

The goal was Neul’s first as a Bruin in his first appearance for UCLA.

With a 1-0 lead coming out of halftime, neither team recorded a shot in the first 15 minutes of the second half. That changed when Virginia got a goal back in the 65th minute.

Brendan Lambe took a shot from outside the 18-yard box that curled into the far corner to tie the match.

The Bruins responded with nine minutes remaining. Logan Hall, who came on for his UCLA debut in the 73rd minute, made an immediate impact off the bench. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida native picked up the ball at the edge of the 18-yard box, took a touch around the defender before unleashing a strike that nestled in the bottom left corner of the goal to put UCLA in front 2-1.

Hall’s goal was also his first as a Bruin in his first appearance.

UCLA’s defense held strong for the final eight minutes as the Bruins picked up the upset win on the road over No. 11 Virginia on opening night.
